Health Reform in Action

Health Reform in Action is the President Obama and the White House’s official site for health reform news. It strives to keep people up to date and involved with the health reform occurring on a federal level.

American Medical Student Association

The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), founded in 1950, is the oldest and largest independent association of physicians-in-training in the United States. AMSA is a student-governed, national organization. They have a membership of 68,000 medical students, premedical students, interns, medical residents and practicing physicians from across the country. AMSA’s action committees and interest groups help expose medical students to information on subjects not generally covered in traditional curricula, and is the only major national medical organization in the US that accepts no sponsorship or funding from any pharmaceutical company. It frequently advocates for health policy reform.

We Can Do Better

We Can Do Better is an organization founded on belief in the power of leverage – that small groups of people can have great impact. It’s focus is to influence the national debate on health and the health care system. They were originally named the Archimedes Movement after Archimedes, a Greek mathematician, who is often quoted as saying, “Give me a lever long enough, and a place to stand, and I can move the earth.” They believe that people in communities can make a difference if they become informed and join with others to influence policy decisions. It strives to get people knowledgeable and passionate at a grassroots level.

Campaign for Better Health

The Campaign for Better Health Care (CBHC) is a grassroots coalition of more than 300 local and statewide organizations representing consumers, health care workers and providers, community organizations, seniors, religious organizations, labor, disability rights organizations, and other citizens to help create and advocate for an accessible, quality health care system that provides for the health care needs of all Illinoisans. Although it is just a coalition for Illinois, it provides great resources, information, and ideas for people across the nation. It sets an example of how coalitions can make a difference on state health legislation.

Families USA

Families USA is an American non-profit consumer health-care advocacy organization. It is an influential health-care lobbyist organization in Washington, D.C. They have taken positions on every major piece of health care legislation, most recently the Medicare Part D plan. The Hill newspaper named founder Pollack and Families USA one of the top twelve lobbyists on health insurance issues.

Health Care for America NOW!

Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is a national grassroots campaign of more than 1,000 organizations in 46 states representing 30 million people dedicated to winning quality, affordable health care.The organization and principles are supported by President Obama, Vice President Biden, and more than 190 Members of Congress. They are building a national movement to win, implement and improve comprehensive health care reform by helping mobilize people in their communities to lobby their U.S. Senators and Representatives in Congress to stand up to the insurance companies and other special interest groups.

Labor Campaign for Single Payer Healthcare

The Labor Campaign for Single-Payer Health Care is intended to increase and help coordinate grassroots labor support for universal, comprehensive, single-payer healthcare as embodied in HR 676, the legislation introduced by Congressman John Conyers, and co-sponsored by 92 members in the last Congressional session. The Campaign’s goal is to promote active engagement in the struggle for a single-payer “Medicare for All” national system at the state and local level among union members and others.  The campaign will join with others in the national single-payer coalition in educating and mobilizing broad support for HR 676 and, as a result, educate elected officials to the necessity of a health care system that is democratically controlled, publicly administered, and single-payer financed. They oppose the inclusion of private insurance companies and investor-owned providers in our country’s health care system.

Medicare Rights Center

The Medicare Rights Center is a national, nonprofit consumer service organization that works to ensure access to affordable health care for older adults and people with disabilities through counseling and advocacy, educational programs and public policy initiatives.

Physicians for a National Health Program

Physicians for a National Health Program is a organization advocating a universal, comprehensive single-payer national health program. PNHP has more than 18,000 members and chapters across the United States. Since 1987, they’ve advocated for reform in the U.S. health care system and educated physicians and other health professionals about the benefits of a single-payer system–including fewer administrative costs and affording health insurance for the 46 million Americans who have none.
